Mids first team

Adam Stammers

Position: Hooker
Description: Adam is a 2009 Trinity School leaver who joined the club at the end of the 2008/09 season from Old Elthamians having also played junior rugby for Warlingham. After starting the 2009/10 season playing for the Mitres during his gap year, Adam quickly forced his way into the clubs 1st team and deservedly picked up the Young Player of the Season award. Adam is now at Leeds University but will hopefully be back to play throughout the season. His favourite moment of 2009/10 was the 94-0 win at home to Old Paulines.

Ali Savage

Position: Centre, Wing or Fullback
Description: Ali re-joined the club last season after missing a couple of seasons due to being plagued by injury. Ali is an old boy of Trinity School and a graduate from Nottingham Trent University. After having an injury free season last year it looks like Ali is back to his best. Expect to see him smiling while scoring a try after try this season!

Andrew Dean

Position: Centre
Description: Andrew originally joined the club in 2000 whilst still at Trinity School. He played his junior rugby at Warlingham and has also played for Harlequins Academy. He took his university degree at Nottingham Trent where he also captained the rugby side before returning to London to play for The Mids. He also bought with him a number of his ex university team mates. During the 2009/10 season Andrew played 11 games for the 1t team scoring 4 tries. He would have played more games but missed nearly half of the season through injury. His highlight of the season was gaining promotion. Andrew is a previous vice captain of the 1st team and is a past winner of the player of the season award. Andrew has played rugby for Surrey at under 16, under 18 and under 20 level along with representing South East England at under 16 level. Andrew is also an able Hockey player and has represented Surrey at under 16 and under 18 level. Like a number of the Old Mids he is a school teacher, working at John Fisher having previously taught at Harris Academy in Croydon.

Ben Bateman

Position: Prop
Description: Ben is the latest in a long line of Mids to wear the shirt of England as he has represented them at various age groups. Ben actually left Trinity in 2006 at the end of his 5th year and went to Wellington College for his 6th form. However the Mids have still remained close to Ben's heart and he comes back to play as often as he can in-between his studies. He has even been known to turn out for a Mids friendly the day before one of his England trials! Ben is current at Loughborough University.

Benjamin Murphy

Position: Wing or Fullback
Description: Benjamin is a 2007 Trinity School leaver who is currently at Loughborough University. He joined the club at the end of last year after recovering from a serious leg injury.

Bryn Hodges

Position: Front Row
Description: Bryn has been at the Mids since leaving Trinity School. He has represented surrey at various age groups and also played for Swansea University. He is looking forward to returning to the team after missing a lot of last season through injury. The book is open on how long it will be until he picks up his next injury!

Dan Crouch

Position: Fly Half
Description: Dan joined the Mids back in 1996 and was part of the Surrey County Colts Cup winning team of 1996/97. Dan is an ex pupil of Trinity School and follows in his dad's footsteps in playing for the club. During the 2009/10 season Dan scored 230 points for the club scoring 5 tries, 35 conversions, 42 penalties and 3 drop goals over 16 games. During his time with the club Dan has taken on a number of roles on the playing committee including coach and 1st team captain. He continues to do this and is currently the 1st team vice captain. For most of his time at the club Dan has also been the regular fly half for CLOB and has even skippered them on a number of occasions. He has also played National League rugby with Westcombe Park and gained representative honours playing rugby for Surrey at all age groups from under 15's up to senior level for the full Surrey side. Dan is an all round sportsman and he also plays cricket for the club. Dan has also gained a number of representative honours on the ski slopes being part of the England Alpine Ski Team, British Junior Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super-G Champion 1996. Dan is also heavily involved in junior rugby through his job as a teacher at Langley Park and a referee for the Young Mids at weekends.

Dave "Johno" Johnson

Position: Centre
Description: Dave is another Langley Park teacher who signed up to the club during the 2nd half of last season. Originally from Scotland, Dave is a previous captain of Westcombe Park 2nd team who adds experience to The Mids back line.

Dave Matthews

Position: Outside Centre
Description: Dave is the latest member of staff from Langley Park to join the club. Dave signed from Beccehamians just in time for the start of this season and the club are expecting him to add some creativity to an already free flowing Mids back line.

David "Stanners" Stanton

Position: Scrum Half, Wing or Centre
Description: Dave is a talkative chap, never one to shut up and always saying what is on his mind! He is a former Trinity player and has now been involved with the club for 12 years. Dave was a member of the 1996/97 Surrey County Colts Cup side. He has also turned out for Southampton University, Surrey at various age groups and CLOB. Dave is also another member of the club that is a teacher at Langley Park Boys School.

David Baxter

Position: Flanker
Description: Dave is a former player at Whitchurch who joined the club last year after taking advantage of the recruitment team in place at The Mids by securing a job with Penta Consulting. He has also previously played for Nottingham Trent University. Dave is an open side flanker who prides himself on his ability on the deck and is looking forward to his first full season with The Mids.

Dean Gardner

Position: Lock/Back Row
Description: Dean is a 2006 Trinity School leaver. After spending his sandwich year in Cambridge and playing for Shelford, Dean has returned to Bath University to complete the final year of his degree. Dean is also joint captain of the Academy side.

Iain "Mungo" Munro

Position: Back Row or 2nd Row
Description: Iain can play almost anywhere in the pack and to be fair has done so on numerous occasions. He is the current holder of the Old Mids "most positions played in a match" award. Iain is one of the most committed members of the squad and this year Iain has taken on the role of Club Secretary. He also benches for Baloo The Bears stunt double.

Ikenna Ezegbe-Akpunonu

Position: 2nd Row
Description: Ikay has bounced back to where he left off after making a return to playing last season following a couple of seasons missed through injury. In his time away he has taken up martial arts which when not playing rugby he uses to catch the criminals on the streets of Croydon.

James "Gnasher" Orchard

Position: Utility Back
Description: James is another player who started playing rugby at Wallington Boys. Like many others he has represented Surrey at various age groups and also played for CLOB. He's been a regular fixture over the years and more often than not can be found in the Old Mids bar or under the thumb at home.

James "Macca" Macleod

Position: Open Side Flanker
Description: James is another ex pupil of Trinity school where he played in the same school team as the likes of Andrew Dean and Ali Savage. James has long been on our radar but it has taken until this season for him to eventually sign up for us. He has not played rugby competitively for about 6 due to injury, university and work so is now raring to show everybody what we have been missing!

James Grice

Position: Scrum Half
Description: James is a former pupil of Trinity School and is a graduate of Oxford Brookes University. He played his junior rugby at Chipstead RFC before joining The Mids in 1997 although his first full season was not until 2001/02 after leaving university. James has played representative rugby for Surrey at various age groups including playing for the full Surrey side at Twickenham. His other representative honours include CLOB and 7s for the Pistol Knights and Samurai Barracudas. James made a return to the club for the 2009/10 season after a couple of years not playing any rugby. James played 18 games, scoring 4 tries and deservedly picked up the player of the season award for his outstanding performances. His highlights of the season were beating Sandown & Shanklin away and grinding out a victory against Ellingham & Ringwood away with a last minute try. For a job, James works as a surveyor up in town.

Joe "The Toe" O'Keefe

Position: Back Row
Description: Joe played rugby at Millfield and Wasps Academy before joining The Old Mids in 1997. Joe was 1st team captain for the last two seasons but has decided to give it up this season so that he can concentrate on his playing. He is also another CLOB regular and a keen 7s player. Joe is famous for his laid back drinking style and has the unique ability to play drums and guitar at the same time. When he finishes playing Joe is planning to work as an after dinner speaker!

Kieran Burnett

Position: Flanker or Centre
Description: Kieran is an ex Trinity School pupil who joined the club in 2009 after graduating from Bristol University. Kieran started last season playing for the AXV in the centres but half way through the season made the switch to flanker and forced his way into the 1st team where he ended up playing 8 games and scoring 1 try. Kieran's highlight of last season was beating Gosport at home on the last day of the season to finish 2010 unbeaten! Kieran is also a keen hockey player.

Mark Butterworth

Position: Lock/No.8
Description: Mark was deservedly our 1st team player of the season last year. Mark is a former pupil of Trinity School who rejoined The Old Mids last year from National League 1 side Esher where he was a first team regular for over 10 years (and even holds the record for most appearance) helping them with their rise through the leagues. He has also represented Surrey on a number of occasions and he continues to be a regular for CLOB. He has also plays the odd game of cricket for The Old Mids cricket side and has recently taken up Tai Boxing. However he tells us that the only thing that scares him is being asked questions by the coaching staff!

Mark Dean

Position: Back Row
Description: Mark is a former Trinity pupil who has played rugby with a varying degree of success in various places. Mark has played representative rugby for Surrey at age group level and for the Royal Navy. He has also played for a variety of clubs on his travels including Amanzimtoti in KwaZulu Natal, Plymouth Albion, Dartmouth, US Portsmouth, Southampton University, University Of British Columbia and of course The Old Mids. He is also a huge advocate of the short game and manages and runs the Samurai Barracudas sevens team. Mark is also in charge of the clubs marketing.

Mark Handley

Position: 2nd Row or Number 8
Description: Mark is a former pupil of Trinity School and a graduate of Liverpool University. He is a former National League player with Orrell and Liverpool St Helens although he has been a member of The Mids since 1995. Mark has played representative rugby for Surrey at all age groups from under 14s up to under 19s and has also played for South East and London Schools at under 18 level. Mark is a keen sportsman and outside of the rugby season he plays cricket for Sanderstead Cricket Club. Mark was a schoolboy county cricketer, captain of the school basketball team, an England handball trialist and is also a London triathlon-er. Mark is one of a number of policemen currently playing for the club although he is the only one who drives a pink beetle! Mark played 9 games for the 1st team in the 2009/10 season and his highlight of the season was the 1st team being promoted!

Martin Riddell

Position: Openside Flanker
Description: Martin is another graduate from Nottingham Trent University who joined the club last season. Martin started out at the Saracens academy before playing National League rugby with Southend. He is also one of a number of policemen that play for the club.

Matt Higgins

Position: 2nd Row
Description: Matt won the player of the season award a couple of seasons ago and since then he has continued to excel both on and off of the pitch. Last year he was Vice Captain of the 1st Team and this season he has moved on to be 1st team Captain. He is also a former Trinity player as well as being a CLOB regular. Matt used to play GB water polo and still plays the occasional game for the old boys team. He is affectionately known as "tickles".

Matt Hoyles

Position: Utility Back
Description: Matt is a recent graduate from Southampton University although he has played for the club for a number of seasons now as he travelled home to play games for us whilst at university. Matt has also done his fair share of recruitment for the club by bringing along some of his ex university team mates. He also added to list of Mids to have represented CLOB by making debut for them last season. Matt is also a keen collector of Lego and is a big fan of the Simpsons.

Michal Ciechanowicz

Position: Prop
Description: Michal is a new recruit for this season. He is a Polish International who by day has the pleasure of working alongside ex player and long term committee member, John Crate.

Nick "Baron" Hamilton

Position: Front Row
Description: Nick is almost as tall as he is wide and is a long standing member of the first team squad as well as a regular for CLOB. Nick also works as a stunt double for Thierry Henry when he isn't playing rugby or playing with numbers.

Oliver Serginson

Position: Flanker
Description: Oli is a 2006 Trinity School leaver and is one of the products of our Youth Academy. He has already played a number of games for the 1st XV when home from Exeter University. Last season as well as playing for Exeter's 1st team Oli was also their Club Captain.

Paul "Ze Baron" Kember

Position: Wing/Fullback/Clown
Description: PK is the current Club Social Secretary. He played in the double winning Surrey Colts cup side alongside the superstars of the era (All of whom were Old Mids) Codling, Roiser, Chuter, Fitzgerald, Butterworth, Mayhead and Seaton who all went on to play for England or National league sides. He has also represented CLOB over many seasons. Sadly lacking in any true ability but generally good at making a buffoon of himself on and off the pitch is the only reason why the club tolerates having him about. Apart from his travels last year he regularly disappeared to play semi pro football when everybody got bored of his drivel. He tries to play somewhere in the backs when he is actually fit (which isn't very often and he has had nearly as many injuries as Bryn "The Glassman" Hodges) and enjoys in his past times Thai boxing, cricket, Airline "Travel" and now Vets football (which is played with all kinds of stuffed animals). He hates Christian Bale.

Rhys Millar

Position: Fullback or Outside Centre
Description: Rhys Millar joined the club in 2009 when he joined Trinity School as a gap student from Australia where he was a pupil at Elderslie High School. Despite only being 17 he made an instant impact in the 1st team during 2008/09 and went on to be Young Player of The Season. Rhys spent the 1st half of the 2009/10 season playing for Trinity school on Saturdays so was not able to play every league game however he still managed to 17 tries in 11 games along with 13 conversions and 7 penalties to finish the season with 132 points. His highlight of the season was the 5 tries he scored in the game away at Camberley. Rhys has also represented CLOB, New South Wales Schoolboys and South West Sydney Academy of Sport. His other sports include cricket and athletics and he is now an assistant PE teacher at Trinity School also working in the school's sports club.

Richard Westerman

Position: Wing
Description: Richard joined the club this year from Fylde after securing a job at Trinity School. He has played for England Students and is a born finisher. Definitely one to watch this season!

Rowan Newman

Position: Utility Back
Description: Rowan is an ex pupil of Trinity School who originally joined the club from Old Beccehamians in 1996 although he had a couple of years out playing for Old Novocastrians after graduating from Leeds University and moving to Newcastle. He was runner up for the 1st team player of the season in 2008/09 and had another great season in 2009/10 scoring 5 tries in 10 games. Rowan's highlight of last season was winning in the last two minutes against Ringwood away. He has also played for Surrey Clubs Under 18's. Rowan is a school teacher at Dartford Grammar School.

Russell Jones

Position: Utility Forward
Description: Russell Jones played his schoolboy rugby at Wallington Boys, with the likes of current National League players Lee Starling and Simon Hunt (both of whom have represented The Mids), before moving to The Old Mids where he was part of the Surrey U21 Cup winning team in his first season. Russell has played representative rugby for Surrey at various age groups. He has also played for Exeter University and for CLOB, for whom he is their current team manager. Russell is also the current Club Captain, who will stalk everybody until they eventually give in and play for the club. He has been at the club for 12 year and holds the current record of being ever present for the last 6 seasons. Russell is also involved in the running of The Young Mids and was one of the coaches of the league winning U14's squad last season. As a reward for all he has done for the club Russell has just been made the youngest ever Vice President of the club.

Sam Timms

Position: Back Row or 2nd Row
Description: Sam is a long standing member of the club and is another who has followed their dad in playing for the club. Sam is a former pupil of St. Andrews School and has been at the club since 2003 having previously played junior rugby for Warlingham. Sam is an ex vice captain of the AXV and during the 2009/10 season he played 6 times for the 1st team. Sam is a client manager for JP Morgan.

Seb Gogerly

Position: Wing
Description: Seb Gogerly is a 2009 Trinity School leaver. He joined the club during the 2nd half of last season and soon forced his way into the 1st team, which is something that a Trinity School boy has not achieved for a number of seasons. Seb is on a gap year this coming season so is hoping to continue his rugby development up at The Mids. Seb is planning to go to University in America the following year where he is hoping to get the chance to play american football.

Shane Roiser

Position: Wing
Description: What can we say about Shane? England Saxons, Sevens and Students and a successful career with London Wasps. But hey, he learnt everything he knows at The Old Mids and it's just great to have him back home!

Steve Berry

Position: Flanker
Description: Steve is a former Trinity pupil who is now entering his 8th season with the club. It has taken him all of this time to work out what the line out call are but he is still trying to learn the rules for all the drinking games.

Tim Jupp

Position: Front Row
Description: Tim Jupp is the son of ex captain and current Club Chairman, Bruce Jupp and is the latest in a line of Jupp's to represent the club going back to as far as records began. After leaving university Tim spent a couple of years in Dorset but has now retuned to the area and forced his way into the 1st team during the second half of last season.

Tom Peters

Position: Fly Half
Description: Tom is a recent addition to the squad this season. He is the latest in a line line of Langley Park school teachers to join the club. His previous club was Tabard.

Will "The Breaker" Flint

Position: Prop
Description: Will initially bought his son Shaun up to the club for a training session but instant became involved himself both coaching and playing. He is instrumental in running the youth development set up and was one of the coaches of last season’s U14's championship winning team. He also did a lot of the work toward the impressive new floodlights. He now finds himself trying to resolve the countries recession by employing half of the club for his company Priority Risk. His love of contact makes prop the ideal position for him and his favourite battle cry is "Black is Back".
